POWERbreathe

Respiratory Muscle Training (RMT)

Introduction

POWERbreathe has a range of respiratory muscle training (RMT) devices that are designed to strengthen your breathing muscles, reduce breathing fatigue and improve your quality of life.

The POWERbreathe breathing trainer strengthens your respiratory muscles using a technique called resistance training. Your respiratory muscles are the muscles you use to breath in and out.

The device creates a resistance to your in-breath, which makes your breathing muscles work harder. Think of it in the same way as you might use weighted dumbbells to strengthen your biceps.

The POWERbreathe RMT device has been proven in more than 100 scientific studies over the past 20 years to benefit the breathing function of many groups. Whether you’re looking to improve your sport performance, aid recovery after surgery, or expand vital capacity with singing, POWERbreathe is a great choice for you

POWERbreathe Medical Breathing Trainers

POWERbreathe Medic breathing device is supported by clinical evidence. This drug-free treatment is ideal for people with asthma, COPD, heart failure, long COVID, ventilator weaning, cystic fibrosis and neuromuscular disease. In addition, the World Health Organisation recognizes the use of POWERbreathe in the recovery from COVID and long COVID.

Entry-level breathing training

  • The POWERbreathe Medic Plus offers the lowest and lightest starting ‘load’ (weight) of all our devices (except for the K-Series), at 9cmH2O (or 1cmH2O without the internal spring).
  • This ‘load’ training is similar to weightlifting, and the POWERbreathe Plus Medic device provides the lightest level of resistance setting (weight lifted) in increments – from 9cmH2O (or 1cmH2O without the internal spring) to 78cmH2
  • The range between each training level is smaller than the POWERbreathe Medic. This makes it ideal for patients who have severe breathing difficulties.

Ergonomic design

  • The POWERbreathe Plus is the second generation of mechanical breathing trainers and features the following design improvements:
  • Optimised airflow performance to make training more effective
  • Fully integrated, easily adjustable resistance mechanism
  • Easy to read resistance level indicator
  • Soft and comfortable mouthpiece
  • Adjustable training load: 9 to 78cmH2O
  • Mouthpiece: Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE)
  • Clear handle cover: Polycarbonate
  • Soft touch adjuster grip: ABS with Santoprene overmoulding
  • Flap valve: Silicone 60
  • O-ring: Nitrile rubber
  • Nose-clip rubber: Silicone 40
  • Nose-clip bridge: Nylon
  • All other components: ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)

How to use the Respiron breathing therapy device

  • Forcefully inhale through the mouthpiece to make the three coloured balls float. Repeating this breathing exercise daily is perfect for pulmonary rehabilitation and physiotherapy. The quality of your breathing will improve and mucus will be loosened.
  • There are two lines in the first cylinder for another breathing exercise. Try and balance the ball between them to train the depth of your breathing rather than the strength.

Adjustable resistance levels

  • The Respiron has four levels of resistance – 0 (easy), 1 (average), 2 (difficult), and 3 (very difficult). Start at level 0 and advance to the next level when the exercise no longer challenges you. Turn the blue regulator to increase the intensity.
  • Once you are comfortable at level 3, challenge yourself further by trying to keep the balls floating for longer periods.

Train expiratory muscles

  • You can also train your expiratory muscles by holding the Respiron upside down and blowing through the mouthpiece. Training your expiratory muscles can help to fight shortness of breath and improve cough strength.

How to clean the Respiron

  • The Respiron is for individual use and should be cleaned after each use. For more thorough cleaning, use the POWERbreathe cleansing tablets.
